LEARNING THE LESSONS: IMPROVING POLICE POLICY AND PRACTICE
Learning the Lessons is a valuable resource for all roles and ranks in policing. Encouraging reflective learning and opportunities for police forces to highlight good practice on a national level
Learning the Lessons is a series of regular magazines produced by the IOPC, which began in 2007. Their aim is to improve police policy and practice, by supporting the police service to learn from our investigations and reviews into complaints and conduct matters. Each issue focuses on a specific theme, for example mental health, or the latest issue published in October, which was focused on corruption.
LEARNING THE LESSONS – THE KEY ELEMENTS
Learning the Lessons magazines include a series of anonymised case studies based on previous IOPC investigations and reviews. The case studies highlight key areas of learning, details of action taken by police forces involved, and information on outcomes for the individual police officers and staff.
Alongside the case studies, the magazine
features articles written by key policing and non-policing stakeholders with experience in the related theme. Learning the Lessons magazines are a

unique resource, bringing together learning from different policing and non-policing areas into one learning product. They are an opportunity for police forces to spotlight new initiatives and showcase current national work.
NATIONAL AND LOCAL LEARNING We work with a range of stakeholders to develop the magazine, from national police organisations including the NPCC, College of Policing and HMICFRS, through to leads, subject matter experts and trainers in police forces, as well as academics and community and voluntary sector organisations. The magazines showcase the latest developments in policing, whether it’s the latest national strategy, or latest emerging practice. Stakeholders within and outside of policing have the opportunity to join our Learning the Lessons development panel to help shape the content of the magazine.
WHO SHOULD READ LEARNING THE LESSONS?
Learning the Lessons is available to everyone. Our main readership are police stakeholders, working across all areas of policing. From call handlers and custody staff, through to frontline policing, the magazine covers a wide range of learning relevant to police officers and staff working in a variety of roles and ranks within policing. Each case study features a set of reflective questions targeted at managers, policy makers, trainers, police officers and staff. These questions are designed to spark discussions and encourage readers to consider how they may have approached that situation, assessing their own knowledge and confidence in that area.
