YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Police Federation’s dedicated in-house pensions advisor Paul Turpin answers the most frequently asked questions
Police pensions can be complex. There are three schemes and a portion of our membership involved in ‘remedy’, which is the result of the move from the 1987 and 2006 schemes. The Police Federation is committed to providing information to members to assist in their understanding of their pension picture. We publish a regular newsletter, have an up-to-date website and are running regular webinars. Previous webinars are available on our website and YouTube channel. There will be further webinars this year and we will be trialing a ‘Know Your Numbers’ session dealing with forecasts and giving members the tools to check their forecasts. WHEN CAN I TAKE MY 2015 PENSION? The earliest age an immediate pension can be taken is at age 55, but only if the individual is in active pensionable service. As the pension is being taken early (before the Normal Pension Age of 60),
age with the 2015 police pension, members can work beyond the normal pension age of 60. If an officer leaves before age 55 then the pension is deferred to their State Pension Age. There is an opportunity to take the 2015 pension at 55 but with a close to 50 per cent actuarial reduction.
The pension can be taken at any point after 55 with a smaller actuarial reduction due to being closer to SPA. If an officer works to age 55 or over and then retires and opts not to take their 2015 pension immediately it is deferred to their State Pension Age.
