What’s Happening to Rates? If you’ve been watching the news, you know the economic landscape has been incredibly volatile. After a long period of steady reductions, there was widespread hope that rates would continue to fall. In fact, just a few months ago, we saw some fixed-rate deals touching just under the 4 per cent mark, bringing a welcome sigh of relief to many homeowners. However, global events have recently
shifted the goalposts. Geopolitical instability, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, has driven up global oil and energy prices. This has reignited fears of inflation, prompting the Bank of England to hold the base rate
steady and lenders to react cautiously to the uncertainty. As a result, that downward trend has reversed. Over the last few months, we have seen fixed rates climb back up to 4.7 per cent and beyond. While we aren’t seeing the extreme, chaotic spikes of a couple of years ago, this recent uptick is a stark reminder of how quickly the market can move and why complacency can be costly.
