PRESiDENT’S REPORT

QUEENS IN THE COMMUNITY

Maggie Dineen ’25 became the first Queens student to receive a Projects for Peace grant, a global program that issues $10,000 grants to primarily undergraduate college students. The program encourages young adults to develop innovative, community-centered, and scalable responses to the world’s most pressing issues.

“My main goal is to make sure I’m not coming into these spaces thinking I’m going to change their way of thinking or way of life,” Dineen says. “I’m truly there to learn and to create relationships.”

Dineen’s project, “The Voice of Migrants,” allowed her to travel to Guatemala from May to August to interview migrants and bring her findings back to Charlote. The goal is to help inform area groups that support migrants on their journey into the United States. She’ll present her findings on campus and to community groups this fall.

Maggie is supported by the Class of ’71 Annual Scholarship, the Judy Leonard Leadership Service Award, and the Davies Fellowship.

Ally Financial Inc. and Lowe’s Companies, Inc. were the 2023 inductees into the Ministrare Society, signifying lifetime commitments of $1 million or more to Queens. Pictured are representatives from the organizations along with

two students, Josue Guevara Molina ’27 and Skyler McNeely ’24, who benefited from the support of these corporations through the Charlote Talent Initiative.

The Learning Society, a membership-driven effort that relies on the generosity of its supporters to create high-quality programming, welcomed two influential speakers to campus, including Dan Buetner, National Geographic Fellow, explorer, and author of “The Blue Zones” and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson, who discussed her book, “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.”

For 35 years, the Learning Society of Queens has brought notable experts to Queens, thanks to the generosity of members who support the group and pave the way for such important discussions. Sponsors for the 2023–24 season included The Sharon at South Park, The Gambrell Foundation, Via Health Partners, McShane Partners, Atrium Health, WFAE, The Broyhill Family Foundation, and SouthPark Magazine.

Thank you to our Executive Committee members for their support.
