The story of Queens has always been one of transformation.
F
ounded in 1857, more than 60 years before women had the right to vote in
North Carolina, we opened our doors as the Charlote Female Institute. Although our name would change multiple times over the next 55 years, our purpose remained resolute: meet the moment.
In 1912, we became Queens College and moved from uptown Charlote to our beautiful Myers Park campus. A 1930 merger with Chicora College brought us our moto, “not to be served, but to serve.” Shortly thereaſter, we began the journey to co-education — first in 1948 to meet the needs of World War II veterans and again as a fully co-ed college in 1987 to ensure financial viability. In 2002, we proudly became Queens University of Charlote to reflect the 1993 addition of the McColl School of Business and other graduate programs.
