GOOD GUYS DON’T MAKE FOR CATCHY NEWS HEADLINES… WHY NOT?!
Think about it: How often, when reading any of the national dailies, or the local paper, or nowadays social media, do you read much positive news – compared to the negative, shock/horror stuff? Reflecting back over the production of this publication during the last quarter century(!), certainly a lot of the stories we’ve compiled under Shame, Fit and Proper and news sections generally have fea- tured the antics of some right idiots.
Why? First of all because those people exist, they did the things they did, and we try to report accurately and keep readers up to date. But mainly because – as they used to say in journalistic parlance – “good news doesn’t sell papers”. People have been conditioned to accept the fact that they are gravitated more towards articles that shock, or disgust, or just plain upset the reader.
In terms of our industry, the press would far sooner run stories head- ed “Cabbie rapes same passenger twice”, than “Cabbie donates fifth of his fares to charity during ArthritisWeek”. No-brainer, right?
Wrong! This month we shall reverse the trend and blow our collec- tive trumpets in praise of the men and women who make this
industry the solid and reliable transport provider it has been for decades, and will continue to be.
Where to start? How about shouting from the rooftops about the hundreds – nay, thousands – of drivers who have saved the lives of people in all walks of life over the years. Not only their own passen- gers from emergency medical situations, delivering babies in the back of their cab, or rushing a heart attack sufferer to hospital, or providing a defibrillator to savemore lives; but also people the driver comes across in his travels, such as smoke victims in house fires, potential suicide victims, injured bystanders or other drivers in road traffic incidents. Yes, we’ve featured hundreds of stories along these lines… but they tend to fade in one’smemory, so we wanted to bring them back to the forefront.
And what about Charity Corner? I’ll bet many of you pass over that section of our paper thinking “Yawn… more do-gooders…” But if you actually read those stories, hundreds more drivers spend several weeks/months of every year devoting their time to days out for under- privileged or disabled children. Hundreds of operators donate money to worthy causes in their community, whether it be for local children’s football club sponsorship, or emergency funds for crash victims, or charity donations for meaningful causes that have touched their lives.
Of course thosewho didmake headlines – at least in this publication, and some of the national dailies – were the scores of drivers who devoted entire days or evenings, free of charge, to safely transport- ing the victims of last year’s horrendous terrorist attacks in London and Manchester. It takes guts and determination to do as so many did: to go back time and time again into danger areas that had been cordoned off, gathering up panicked concert-goers or innocent peo- ple on the pavement who had been blown sideways or run down, and get them either to local hospitals or – if they were not injured – back to a safe haven somewhere.
In this month’s edition we feature the stories and views of several women who have worked in our industry for many years; this gives you an insight as to why there aren’t more women in the trade – and
