TORFAEN PRIVATE HIRE DRIVER FINED FOR SMOKING IN HIS CAR

A private hire driver in Torfaen has been fined for smoking in his car. Torfaen Council’s licensing team received a complaint that a driver had lit up in his private hire vehicle.

A report to the council’s licensing committee said: “It is against the law to smoke in a vehicle that carries members of the public. A fixed penalty notice for smoking in

a smoke-free premises has been issued to the driver and to date has not been paid.” The report did not include the total amount of the fixed penalty notice.

ILLEGAL PRIVATE HIRE DRIVERS FINED MORE THAN £1,000 IN TELFORD

Two private hire drivers have been fined more than £1,000 each after pleading guilty to plying for hire and having no insurance

in

Telford. Telford & Wrekin Council prosecuted the two private hire

drivers at Telford Magistrates' Court last week, after they were caught illegally plying for hire during an operation by

the

council's enforcement team. Both drivers were licensed by another council but illegally

picked up the fares in Telford and Wrekin. The drivers were ordered to pay £1,135

each, had their licence suspended and had six penalty points added to their driving licence.

BATH CABBIE HAS LICENCE REVOKED AFTER HE DROVE PASSENGERS WITH DANGEROUS CAR

A taxi driver has had his licence revoked after driving 110 miles after failing an MoT. His vehicle had four major defects and one “do not drive until repaired” dangerous defect - and lied to Bath and North East Somerset Council’s licensing officers about the journey. The taxi driver told the council’s

licensing sub-committee that he took full responsibility, apologised, and was prepared to accept any punishment.

He added that he had no intention to harm anyone, and had family and personal problems at the time of the issues. He said that after his car had failed the MoT he had taken it back to get it fixed.

NORTHAMPTON PH DRIVER FINED AFTER RUNNING OVER PASSENGER’S FOOT

A Northampton private hire driver who ran over a woman’s foot after failing to ensure that she had got in the vehicle has been fined. Mohammed Dilal Miah, 49, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by

driving a Mercedes PHTM JUNE 2023

without due care and attention last October. Miah was fined £498 by magistrates, ordered to pay £309 costs and a victim surcharge and had his licence endorsed with seven points.

Councillors revoked his taxi licence on notice, stating: “Whilst members acknowledged that the licensee may have had personal and family issues during the relevant period, this is no excuse for neglecting the upkeep and essential repairs of his vehicle in order to ensure the safety of the travelling public.” The committee also noted that all four of his tyres only had a tread of 2mm - just above

the legal

minimum of 1.6mm - in May 2022. But he then drove a further 2,701 miles on those tyres, only replacing them after his car failed its MoT in September 2022 by which time the ply or cords were exposed on one tyre, and another had a cut deep enough to reach them.
