TAXI PASSENGERS SING THEIR HEARTS OUT IN TYNESIDE CARPOOL KARAOKE
A Tyneside taxi boss gives his passengers the chance to sing their hearts out. The Chronicle re- ports that Simon Oliver, 38, offers to record videos similar to the celebrity sin- galongs on James Corden’s chat show in America. The Green Dot Taxis
‘karaoke cab’ has been a smash hit with people eager to perform before the camera.
Simon and his daughter Jasmine, 9, sang along to the soundtrack from the Disney film Frozen and that convinced the father of four to open the offer up to
everyone.
He said: “She en- joyed herself so much, it just seemed like an obvious idea to try it with my pas- sengers. “Now, it’s unbeliev- able how many people we get ask- ing if they can hire the ‘karaoke cab’. People just love it -
ADDISON LEE VOWS PROFITS RETURN IN UBER FIGHT
Addison Lee boss Andy Boland has insisted the compa- ny will make profits again this year, after being driven into the red by spending big to fight off the threat of Uber. The company, which provides up to 25,000 rides a day in the capital, made pre-tax losses of £20.8m off sales of £345.7 million in the year to last August, compared with £10.5m profits the year before. Boland said that beefing up
its website and apps, as well as one-off costs from snapping up a string of busi- nesses over the past couple of years, had hit profits. He told the Evening Standard: “We knew that and we planned for that. It will help us scale up more quickly in the future in an incredibly com- petitive market.” He expects revenues to hit the £400m mark this year. Addison Lee has been making great- er efforts to expand
in America, and in September bought Tandem - a car booking platform - for an undisclosed sum. The business has faced criticism, alongside Uber, over working conditions. It suffered a legal blow last year after a tribunal said Addi- son Lee drivers were “workers” and were owed holiday pay and the minimum wage.
Boland added that driver earnings have increased by seven per cent.

MAN TRIES TO USE BRIDLINGTON POLICE AS TAXI SERVICE
A man tried to use a police car as a taxi when he didn’t want to walk the rest of his journey. According to
the
Hull Daily Mail, the man flagged officers down between Hornsea and Brid- lington as he made the walk to a cara- van park on a recent Friday night.
The police pulled over, thinking the man needed assis- tance, only to be annoyed when he asked for a lift back to his home for the night, because he couldn’t be both- ered to walk. The Bridlington, Driffield and Horn- sea community team posted on Facebook:
“Driving back to Hornsea and we get flagged down by a male in Bridlington. “Thinking he needs help we stop and then he asks if he can have a lift up the road just purely because he didn’t want to walk the rest of the journey to a caravan park. #notataxi”
