From performance to page – new voices bringing a positive Spin!
C
HILDREN’S Laureate Joseph Coelho has worked with 10 young spoken word poets from under represented backgrounds to create a new anthology of 50 poems.
Spin is the result of the collaboration between Joseph, as a mentor as well as editor for the book, the young poets, and Apples and Snakes (https://applesandsnakes. org) – the “Spoken Word Trailblazers.” Here the poets featured in Spin talk about their experience of the project and share some of the favourite poetry from the anthology.
Selected for their qualities of originality, expression and style, they represent the best of a new generation of gifted young poets writing for children and young people. These are poems intended to be read aloud and shared. Spin is out now from Otter-Barry Books, paperback £8.99 9781915659187
Anneliese Amoah I am a British-Ghanaian writer and poet. I first started writing during university as a way of articulating my thoughts. I then started to attend and perform at open mic nights and then started to write short stories. As I started to become more confident in my work, I began entering poetry and short story competitions which is where I was able to work with poetry organisations such as Apples and Snakes and start to get my short stories published by organisations such as Spread the Word. It was great to work with Joseph and I learnt so much from him during the writing process. I have admired his impact in the industry for a while now and he is such a great person to learn from. My eyes were opened to different forms of poetry that I’d never come across before and it was nice to step out of my comfort zone. It feels surreal to be part of the book
