“It was fun doing this project. Like the

boys, I particularly enjoyed making the splashes! I created these from blue paper, then cut them out.”

Yu Rong enjoys delving into new worlds, saying: “In the last few years, I have worked on books about deaf children, abandoned children, children who change schools, children who would like to leave home and get lost. Each of these children finds themselves in different situations with us. I am keen to get to know them and understand their lives more fully. By doing books about them, I can help myself to grow stronger, and learn how to be grateful for what we have, and be patient and generous to others.”

One of Yu Rong’s most ambitious projects has been the reinterpretation of a 900 year-old Chinese painted manuscript. The resulting book, Have You Seen the Magpie?, features a concertina pull out that stretches over five metres. Yu Rong says: “The painting is called Along the River During the Qingming Festival. The book is unusual in that it is in the form of a concertina, one side is a new story along the original painting’s sites, using chinoiserie style in illustrations, the other side is a hide and seek game, I have hidden the character from the new story inside the painting itself so that modern child readers will be attracted to read the 528cm hand scroll from right to left carefully, in order to find the characters and discover more from the remarkable painting.” This desire to continually stretch herself is reflected in other upcoming projects –

from children’s magazines to new books. Flying High was released this spring and tells the story of a young boy who overcomes bullying and realises the value

of being an individual.

“Another book I am working on currently will be dedicated to all dads and mums in the world. Having worked
