Create a more inclusive library and book space

Reading for pleasure is recognised as one of the best ways to improve educational outcomes in children. As part of the Yoto Carnegies Shadowing scheme you already know the power that a good book can have in creating a lifelong love of reading.

But did you know that there is a great way of creating a lasting addition to your school or library that will help you foster a love of reading for all?

Pen&inc. magazine celebrates inclusive and representative books for children. It showcases the latest books and talent behind them, with interviews and articles from new and established authors, poets and illustrators sharing their inspiration.

Recent interviewees include: Yoto Carnegie Medal winners Jeet Zdung (Illustration, 2023), Manon Steffan Ros (Writing, 2023), Jason Reynolds (Writing, 2021); Tyger author SF Said and long-time illustration collaborator, Dave McKean; prize-winning debut novelist Christine Pillainayagam; and authors Manjeet Mann; Onjali Q. Rauf; Sharon King-Chai and Children’s Laureate Joseph Coelho.

There are two issues of Pen&inc. annually and each issue features hundreds of diverse and inclusive titles in its listings guide, helping you to discover new and representative books that your readers will love.

A year’s subscription costs less than £10 and helps to support the ongoing work of Pen&inc. to improve representation in children’s publishing. Subscribe at: www.cilip.org.uk/penandincsubscribe or scan the QR code.

Pen&Inc magazine and the Yoto Carnegies are partnered in their mission to create a better, more inclusive world through reading for pleasure, and are both a part of CILIP, the Library and Information Association.
