Fantastic worlds, amazing stories!

AS SCHOOLS returned for a new year, so the Pen&inc. team were putting together this Autumn/ Winter issue with plenty to inspire young readers. We hear from artists and writers and take a special look at some projects that are helping to amplify under-represented voices in children’s publishing.

Catherine Barter looks back on 10 years of the Little Rebels Radical Children’s Fiction Award, while Jasmine Richards talks about how Storymix is bringing diverse voices and inclusive characters to the attention of mainstream publishers, helping to shift the balance to be more representative of society.

Oliver Sykes, author and Lead Artist with the Stories of Care, explains how young people from care and low-income backgrounds are being given a chance to shine through the project.

Our front cover is a celebration of all things India, featuring a Diwali scene from India, Incredible India, illustrated by Nina Chakrabarti. We talk to Nina about her artistic influence and her own links to India.

We also talk to Jasbinder Bilan, who wrote the words that accompany Nina’s stunning illustrations, about her representation of strong, independent girls in books like Asha and the Spirit Bird. Both Nina and Jasbinder were born in India before moving to the UK with their families, and India, Incredible India is a chance for them to show off the incredible people, places and achievements that have come out of the country.

Sticking with India as inspiration, Puneet Bhandal introduces the first instalment of her Bollywood Starlet Rivals series.

And Jake Hope talks to 2022 Yoto Kate Greenaway Medal Winner Danica Novgorodoff about the power of graphic novels in storytelling.

For more inspiration turn to our listing sections and discover the latest diverse, inclusive and representative titles and see what the power of a good book can bring to children’s lives.

This issue of Pen&inc. is dedicated to the memory of Rachel Middleton, a much-loved former colleague who was instrumental in developing and launching Pen&inc.
