Tell us about your involvement with India, Incredible India. How did it come about, what were you keen to reveal about India, its people, its culture and heritage in your illustrations? How did that work with Jasbinder in terms of developing your ideas? I was contacted by an editor at Walker Books about the project. It was different to anything I’d worked on before and thought it would be great to work with Jasbinder on this. I went straight out and bought her book Asha and the Spirit Bird and thought it brilliant.
It was a wonderful opportunity to bring my Indian experiences to the project. I brought my memories of Calcutta/Kolkata to the spice market spread and to the pages on West Bengal. I had travelled on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as a child, so could bring my fond memories to those pages. Jasbinder taught me loads I didn’t know – about modern India and its varied and amazing population. Things like the amazing sculpture garden hidden in a forest in Northern India; the trajectory of the Ganges, India’s great river; the Satish Dhawan Space Centre featuring two remarkable woman scientists. It was a fabulous journey to go on. It has made me want to return back as soon as I can.
What is the next project you are working on? I am working on a series of small nature books for children published by Hachette. The first one is about Fungi, I have always wanted to do a book about fungi as they are so fascinating. I love drawing them and learning about the strange world that they inhabit.
