Celebrating Artsmark20 through the power of pictures

This year sees the 20th anniversary of Artsmark, the creative quality standard for schools and education settings, accredited by Arts Council England.

A

S part of the anniver- sary celebrations, Artsmark has joined forces with CILIP and Peters Books to

select some great illustrated books from the illustrious list of past Kate Greenaway winners. The Greenaway Greats book selections include 10 books each for primary and secondary schools, and gives children and young people a chance to discover diverse and accessible titles. Mirroring the annual Kate Greenaway Awards Shadowing Scheme, schools across the county can take part in the Greenaway Greats reading scheme, using the books to encourage reading for pleasure develop visual literacy skills, and inspire creativity. Jake Hope, Chair of the Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards Working Party, said: “The Kate Greenaway medal has recognised some of the most innovative and exciting illustrators across its history. To help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Artsmark we are delighted to offer children and young people the opportunity to make their own choice of Greenaway Greats.

“We’ve selected two collections of ten books – one aimed at primary and one aimed at secondary schools – and are inviting young readers to share their views and vote for their favourite to be named the readers’ Greenaway Great! There will be loads of opportunities to get creative too with draw-alongs, opportunities to engage with illustrators and to have a lot of fun.”

As part of the Artsmark20 celebrations, the ACE-funded project is highlighting the importance of having access to a school library. Jake said: “In this special anniversary year, Artsmark is celebrating the vital role reading and libraries play in the

creative lives of children and young people throughout their education. Greenaway Greats celebrates what Arts Council’s work for children stands for – giving young people the opportunity to have their voices heard, spark their imaginations and nurture creativity.”

Through the scheme, Arts Council is gifting Greenaway Greats book packs to a selection of Artsmark schools and education settings in Arts Council’s priority places, reaching children and young people most in need.

Anne Appelbaum, Director of Children & Young People at Arts Council said: “As champions of a creative and cultural education, we are delighted to bring Artsmark and CILIP together to create the Greenaway Greats scheme, which celebrates what Artsmark stands for – providing young people with a platform to have their voice heard and to instil a joy in being creative.” A range of resources have been created to support the Greenaway Greats scheme, and all of them are available to download for free from the Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards website. The resources include talking points, activity ideas, biographies of the artists and a list of further reading ideas. All of it is designed to celebrate the power of illustrated books, and give children and young people an opportunity to be inspired to get creative as they explore some of the best examples of outstanding illustration.

Jake says: “Think back to the first books that made a real impression upon you and chances are they were illustrated. Even before we can read words, pictures help to build some of the habits and behaviours of the reader, feeding minds and imaginations! These are some of the reasons behind setting up the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration,

Rob Green (rob.green@cilip.org.uk) is Editor, Pen&Inc.

the UK’s oldest and most prestigious award for children’s book illustration which recognises the many ways illustrations help to convey meaning, mood, information and emotion. “It is 65 years since the inaugural medal was given to Edward Ardizzone’s sea-faring adventure, Tim All Alone. Since then, the award has recognised a huge variety of styles and forms; picture books, pop-ups, non-fiction books, graphic novels, poetry and nursery rhyme collections to name just a few! A roll call of some of the past winners include many pioneers of the field including Shirley Hughes, Raymond Briggs, Lauren Child, Helen Oxenbury, John Burningham, Janet Ahlberg and Shaun Tan. There’s a wealth of artistic techniques and talent which help to illuminate and better understand the world readers inhabit and the emotions they encounter as part of that.”
