Fantastic worlds, amazing stories!

Rob Green Editor rob.green@cilip.org.uk

WELCOME BACK to another issue of Pen&inc. with a great line-up of interviews as we head towards a summer of reading.

This issue we speak to emerging and established talent, and look at how empowering books can be for young people. Inclusive publishing is all about surfacing stories and re- flecting diverse characters that give every child and young person a space to enjoy reading.

Each of our interviewees has their own style, but one thing unites them all – their belief in the power of a good story. Whether they are tackling difficult issues or introducing a new superhero to the world, the story has the power to unlock imaginations and help readers feel seen and heard.

Our cover for this issue is an amazing demonstration of what happens when young people are included in the creative process. You Can brings the voices and advice from dozens of children to the pages of a picture book for all ages. We speak to author Alex Strick and illus- trator Steve Antony about the messages, the storytelling and the insights they gained from young contributors.

Diverse Book Award winner Manjeet Mann discusses the inspiration behind her winning verse novel, Run Rebel, the reaction to it, and her new book, The Crossing. She also talks about her new picture book, and why it is important for everyone to be allowed to have big dreams.

Alex Falase-Koya is a relative newcomer to the world of children’s literature, but his debut series about a young superhero named Marv is already proving popular. The third title is out soon – perfect holiday reading for young fans.

Debut novelist Christine Pillainayagam brings us Ellie Pillai is Brown, a tale teenage love and acceptance. She reveals the importance of finding our own place in the world, rather than bending to someone else’s ideal.

For more inspiration turn to our listing sections and discover the latest diverse, inclusive and representative titles and see what the power of a good book can bring to children’s lives.
