Speaker Profile: Alison McNab Alison McNab is joining CILIP Unconference 2025 to look at the important subject of keeping up to date. During her career Alison has regularly pioneered the implementation of new technologies and resources, with a focus on their use to enhance service development and delivery. She has specialised in the marketing and exploitation of e-content. Her final professional roles had a particular focus on supporting researchers at all stages of the research lifecycle.
Keeping up to date
It’s important to keep learning Even if you’re not planning an immediate career move or you have moved out of full time work, thinking ahead will keep you interested and engaged. When you start looking for a new position employers will always look for evidence of continuing professional development. This shows commitment to the role and that you are willing to take on challenges. The library,

information and knowledge sectors are facing rapid change, which is why keeping up to date is essential for keeping interested and achieving success. We asked Alison to share some highlights from her session on keeping up to date: “After accidentally retiring during lockdown, I focussed on caring respon- sibilities for several years, although I remained a CILIP member. Last autumn I started taking a more active interest in professional matters again. Throughout my career I had a focus on current awareness – both for my own CPD and as an academic librarian training researchers in this vital area. However, resources and apps move on rapidly, particularly when you no longer have access to subscription resources. Does this resonate with you? While Open Access to much publicly funded research is a great benefit, it can still seem fragmented. If you want to stay up to date with the professional literature, I would encourage you to use the resources that your CILIP membership offers:
l Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA);
l ProQuest Library Science; l selected Sage journals.
Within these you can register to save alerts and searches. If you find articles of interest but don’t have full-text access, try these options:
l CORE
https://core.ac.uk/ provides free tools to find, discover and explore the wealth of open access research;
l Access to Research
www.accesstoresearch.
org.uk/ gives free, walk-in access to over 30 million academic articles in participating public libraries across the UK.
