Super Searcher is about empowering people of all ages with the skills to question what they read, understand where it comes from, and search more effectively. – Jo Cornish
Delivering skills and training to empower digital confidence
A NEW training programme that has the potential to reach thousands has been launched by CILIP and Google in the UK. The Super Searchers programme is already delivering positive outcomes in other countries. Rob Green looks at what it means for UK.
THE impact of digital tools and services in modern life has been all encompassing, changing the way we interact with individuals and organisations. And yet for many people there is still a disconnect and a discomfort in using digital services, and the benefits they can bring.
A recent report from the House of Lords Commu- nications and Digital Committee showed a worry- ingly high proportion of the UK’s population were classed as digitally excluded, with a lack of skills alongside a lack of resources meaning millions of individuals are effectively unable to access and use even the most basic digital services (

The report states: “Digital exclusion affects mil- lions of UK citizens. Every day, people are unable to access the internet because they do not have the connection, device or skills to get online. This digital divide is undermining efforts to improve UK productivity, economic growth and socio-economic inclusion.”
Google’s Super Searchers programme, delivered
by CILIP as the UK’s trusted delivery partner, addresses the issue of skills directly and is designed to deliver training and support for a network of public and school library workers, who will then be able to work with their users to improve search

skills. The Super Searchers programme also utilises a “train-the-trainer” model, helping to efficiently cascade skills to library workers across the country. The programme will include core elements aimed at improving people’s skills in using online search tools, especially as the impact of artificial intelligence influenced search results takes hold. The aim is to deliver skills that provide a platform of knowledge for users, but which go beyond the basics of search and that will build a deeper understanding and confi- dence in the results and how to use them.
