IN DEPTH ‘‘

Rob Green is Editor of Information Professional.

This project is about enabling real, meaningful clim ate action at the heart of communities. Library services are deeply rooted in place giving them a unique ability to harness local communities, understand wider society and tackle complex challenges. – Louis Coiffait-Gunn

Let’s go green

Local Communities across the UK are set to benefit from a stream of new Green Library Hubs. Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund’s Climate Action Fund, the project will see 10 hubs acting as catalysts for community engagement and partnerships on climate action. Rob Green looks at how the £1.2 million scheme will build sustainable communities.

OVER the course of the next three years, Green Library Hubs will be springing up in towns across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with the first three set to be up and running this year, with a further seven introduced over the lifetime of the project. Each of the hubs will provide a dedicated space in libraries, that will enable people to discover more about the steps they can take to have a positive impact on local environments – raising community

awareness, behaviour change and grassroots action on climate change. The three-year programme will be delivered in partnership with the British Library, Julie’s Bicycle and CAG Consulting, along with the 10 libraries across the UK.

The project is an integral part of the Green Librar- ies Campaign, and activities delivered through the Green Libraries Hubs will support the campaign as it enables climate action in local communities through a network of coordinated library services.
