The Media and Information Literacy Alliance: a timely initiative
HOW might information literacy be better recognised as a vital contri- bution to society? This is a question which is addressed by a new initia- tive, the Media and Information Literacy Alliance (MILA), which was set up over the summer. MILA, which is co-sponsored by CILIP
and the CILIP Information Literacy Group (ILG), seeks to promote media and information in the UK as a fundamental building block for a healthy, inclusive, dem- ocratic society. It will achieve this by pro- viding an open platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange, and by serving as a vehicle for advocacy, capacity-building, research and programme delivery. There is an underlying and timely reason for taking forward this initiative now. In July, the Department for Digital,
Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) set out the UK Government’s Online Media Literacy Strategy (
https://bit.ly/3jjNgno), which includes key sections specifically on information literacy. For the first time, the UK has a national framework for media and infor- mation literacy. One of the Strategy’s key proposals is a call for better coordination between different stakeholders, across all relevant sectors, to help develop media and information literacy interventions. MILA fits neatly with this intention. Already, MILA has attracted some attention. There have been useful conversations with DCMS and Ofcom; other organisations that have expressed an early interest include the Association for Citizenship Teaching, the Guardian Foundation, the National Literacy Trust, Newsguard, the Wikimedia Founda- tion and the WEA (Workers Educational
CILIP CYMRU Wales AGM and Open Day
CILIP’s CYMRU Wales AGM This year’s AGM will take place online on 4 November, and includes a members open day, kicking off with a question and answer session with CILIP’s Vice President Kate Robinson, and CILIP Cymru Wales Chair Lou Peck. Lou said: “It’s been a year-and-a-half of ups and downs, but one thing is for sure, libraries remain essential and if anything have shown society how truly integral they are. Teams have been separated, colleagues re-assigned to priority areas, and general disruption has been experienced. “But one thing is for sure, this community is resilient. We may not
have accomplished all we wanted to in this last year, but I am so incredibly proud of each committee member for everything they do. “Join us at our CILIP Cymru Wales AGM where, as well as the more formal proceedings, I’ll be talking with Kate Robinson, CILIP’s Vice President about her experience over the last year or so, her career and advice learnt along the way, and so much more.” “Rebecca Evans MS, the Minister for Finance and Local Govern- ment will be announcing the winners of the Welsh Team of the Year Award, and Nick and Jo will be leading an interactive discussion about ‘The Big Conversation’ – make sure you have your say.” CILIP Chief Executive Nick Poole and Chief Development Officer Jo Cornish will be bringing CILIP’s Big Conversation to the Open Day. Big Conversation events are taking place online and across the country, giving you the opportunity to find out more about CILIP’s future and the range of benefits and support on offer to all of CILIP’s members. Association). It’s still early days and the aim is to grow this initial list of players. An initial round-table meeting took place on 26 August, co-chaired by CILIP CEO Nick Poole and Jane Secker, Chair of ILG. This helped lay the ground for initial activities. For instance, MILA has already produced a framework which illustrates how media and information literacy relate to everyday and lifelong experiences. And the Alliance has started to scope a systematic review of media and information literacy, which will help to develop the evidence base in this area. It also has its own dedicated website at
http://mila.org.uk/. There will be regular reports in Informa- tion Professional charting the progress of this important initiative. For further infor- mation, please contact Stéphane Goldstein at
