ith the UN Climate Change Conference 2021 (AKA ‘COP26’) fast approaching, ‘Sustainability’ seems to be the topic on everyone’s lips. How can we work together globally to save the planet (and by association, our- selves) from the worst effects of Climate Change? Sustainability is going to be a major theme for CILIP and for the information, library and knowledge profession in the years to come. It is already emerging as a central topic in CILIP’s ‘Big Conversation’ – our UK-wide programme of member engagement to co-create our next five-year Action Plan.
W
If you haven’t already seen the #WeAreCILIP campaign, I would strongly encourage you to make your voice heard via
www.cilip.org.uk/ WeAreCILIP.
But what does ‘sustainability’ mean in the context of libraries, information and knowledge? This month, I have been meeting with library leaders, leading specialists, designers, architects and engi- neers to try to answer this question. Their responses could not be more relevant for us all.
The first is that true sustainability is about ongoing dialogue – a process of learning, evaluation, knowledge-sharing and adaptation in which we understand the complex interactions between our deci- sions, our use of resources and their environmental impacts. The second is that Climate Change impacts most on people who are already either living in poverty or who are from marginalised com- munities. We must ensure that our response as ethical information professionals addresses ‘Climate Justice’ if we are to avoid contribut- ing to the harms experienced by these communities. We have already set out CILIP’s commitments to a ‘just transition’ in our Changing Lives position statement (
www.cilip.org.uk/changinglives). The third is that we can make a huge difference – libraries in all sectors can act as trusted sources of knowledge and insight, helping people to make better and more sustainable choices in their daily lives and their work.
Our brilliant colleagues at CILIP in Scotland have made a great start to our work in this area with the #CILIPSGoGreen campaign (
www.cilips.org.uk/cilips-go-green) – highlighting the ‘climate beacon’ libraries in Inverclyde and the Western Isles as well as the work of SLIC and the National Library of Scotland. We look forward to build- ing on this across the rest of the UK in the coming year. Finally, I wanted to make use of this regular column to send heartfelt congratulations to CILIPS Vice President Amina Shah on her appointment as the new National Librarian of Scotland. Amina brings tremendous vision, energy and expertise to the role and I am sure you will all joining me in wishing her every success!
