Are you interested in becoming an assessor for the new Marine Surveying
Practitioner accreditation scheme? The soon to be launched Marine Surveying Practitioner (MSP) scheme, to be powered by IIMS and the Marine Surveying Academy, has been under development for some considerable time, but is nearing completion. The pandemic has slowed up the process. But the team of assessors who will underpin the integrity of the scheme is soon to be assembled and we need your help. Would you like to be an assessor in your own particular area(s) of surveying, reviewing the applications of others who believe they share the same depth of knowledge as you do in your specialism? Is so, please step forward and put your name up for consideration.
This new initiative to create a minimum acceptable worldwide standard for marine surveying is a bold, but long overdue one. It is not a quick fix to a worldwide problem and will take time to build, but the long term aim is to recognize the competency of those who really ‘know their stuff’ and to make it harder for those who don’t with the result being enhanced safety of life at sea and on water. Its success will be ultimately determined by accurately reviewing and confirming the specialisms that are being claimed by surveyors, backed by the supply of objective evidence, which meet the requirements of the scheme and the individual assessor.
At this stage, there are currently: - Yacht & Small Craft Surveyors (up to 24 metres) - 6 material types and 35 specialisms available to apply for.
- Superyacht Surveyors (over 24 metres) - 5 material types and 12 specialisms available to apply for.
- Cargo & Commercial Ship Surveyors - 30 cargo surveying specialisms and 47 other commercial surveying specialisms available to apply for.
Payment for each assessment is available to those on the assessor panel. If you are keen to know more, please drop an email to Holly Trinder at
info@iims.org.uk to express your interest with the areas you are a specialist in and we will send you more information.
