NEWS IN BRIEF

Creating standards for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

BSI has provided guidance to UK customers and stakeholders to help them understand the changes for standards referenced in UK regulation, now that the EU exit transition period has ended. The UK government has recognized the potential for standards to provide solutions for the technology and industry challenges – known as ‘the Fourth Industrial Revolution’ – in its innovation strategy and in the publication of its ‘Action Plan for the Fourth industrial Revolution’. The Action Plan was developed from a series of workshops and stakeholder meetings involving BSI and partner organizations from the UK’s National Quality Infrastructure (NQI), including UKAS (the United Kingdom Accreditation Service) and NPL (the National Physical Laboratory), alongside offi cials from both the Better Regulation Executive and the Offi ce for Product Safety and Standards within BEIS. The Action Plan is intended to enable

standards, measurement, and accreditation to support innovation and technological change, and six actions have been agreed to secure effective synergies between standards, policy making and strategic research:

years of innovation at the ISO Week Conference

Celebrating 120

• Deploy an agile approach to develop and review standards in priority areas to respond to the challenges of fast-paced technological change.

• Accelerate the digitalization of standards to foster greater effi ciency and fl exibility for industries of the future.

• Upscale engagement with stakeholders, in particular innovators, smaller businesses and consumer representatives, to boost their participation in standardization and draw in their views.

• Strengthen the strategic coordination between government, the NQI partners and UK Research and Innovation on future priorities for standardization and the wider NQI to support innovation.

• Raise awareness of how standards and the wider NQI can help inform and support the delivery of government policies, in particular to enable innovation and the deployment of emerging technologies.

• Embed consideration of standards in the policy-making process to unlock their value in fostering growth and innovation.

“We are delighted to support the action plan, which fi ts well with our development plans, for example the potential of BSI Flex to deliver a more agile approach to standards-making, and the development of our digital platforms,” said Daniel Mansfi eld, Head of Policy Engagement.
