DIGITAL STANDARDS CASE STUDY: CHIPSIDE P

aul Moorby runs a highly successful business called Chipside, a company that built its success on providing cashless payment apps for local authority car parks around the UK. Since being launched in 2003, Chipside has

grown into a specialist software development company providing products and services to around a quarter of local and regional government traffi c authorities in the UK, delivering smart city initiatives to cities, towns, villages and regions. “We simply couldn’t do all the things we do unless we met the standards that apply in the area in which we work,” says Paul. These include standards such as ISO 27001 information security management and ISO 22301, business continuity management systems.

As CEO of a small business, Paul’s view of standards is that they are liberating for businesses like his, providing the credibility they need to get a foot in the door. “If an SME can point to a standard and say, ‘I am complying with this standard’, then they can get on and do their day jobs.” Paul has started to expand his business

overseas and has found that an association with the BSI brand through adopting standards reinforces the trust in his own brand. Many of the international standards his products comply with started life as British standards. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet kings, queens and ambassadors all over the world and they all respect the British rule of law, and associate standards with that. Having the backing of British Standards when I’m in negotiations abroad makes my job of

promoting our technology so much easier. Working to these standards is critical to our brand.” Standards also provide a

gateway to certifi cation with other

trade bodies that is an essential part of Paul’s business.

“Because we had designed our system to ISO 27001 on information security management it enabled us to get level 1 certifi cation for credit card payments with the credit card industry’s trade body, PCI. The standard helped us pass the audit because all the elements we needed were already in place.” In striking business deals overseas, Paul has found that BSI’s focus on standards

development in emerging technologies has proved of real benefi t, “Part of the reason that we get such a positive

reception is that we can point to our systems complying with internationally

accepted standards. “There are two major questions our potential customers ask us; ‘are your systems secure?’ and ‘is our citizens’ information being used in the right way?,” said Paul. “The standards we work to align with GDPR regulations in the UK. This means keeping data safe, using information for the right purposes and not keeping it if we don’t need to. They said in Australia that we were 10 years ahead of anything they had because of our compliance with these important standards.”
