PROJECT EGYPT B

SI expertise has been central to a project to help Egypt develop its economy, improve trade, boost exports and create jobs. The Trade and Domestic Market

Enhancement Programme (TDMEP) project was led by Mohammad Shohaieb who works in BSI’s International Projects team. The objective of the International Project team is to help emerging and developing economies strengthen their quality infrastructure and to facilitate improved trade through economic development.

“An improved quality infrastructure ecosystem will enable Egyptian

manufacturers to produce products that are safe, of good quality and competitive in both domestic and international markets,” said Mohammad.

BSI was awarded the EU- funded project to help Egypt improve its national quality infrastructure and develop a long term industry development strategy. Although Egypt has huge potential, it currently lags behind regional competitors in North Africa when it comes to trade links with Europe in industrial goods (see ‘Putting the project in context’ page 16). “Our overarching goal is economic development, and

The work of the Project Team has been warmly welcomed in Egypt by government, regulatory and private sector bodies as the comments below demonstrate:

Since the project started in September 2015 the team has been based in Cairo working closely with the Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry and liaising with other agencies and the private sector on a regular basis, visiting sites throughout the country. “We have been working with multiple

stakeholders in Egypt; policy makers, regulators, technical people and the private sector. There are 13 agencies alone who

are involved in quality infrastructure,” said Mohammad. The team has a wide range of responsibilities from providing policy advice and supporting strategic decision-making, to technical assistance and outreach programmes for SMEs to help in their development. The team has built a strong relationship

with Egypt’s national standards body, the Egyptian Organization For Standardization & Quality (EOS). Guidance from the project team has meant EOS is ready to offer accredited certifi cation and conformity assessment services that will give Egyptian companies access to international markets.
