eptember 2020 was an important month in the OPEC calendar, marking 60 years of the organization’s existence. Founded in 1960, OPEC’s historic


journey began in a meeting that took place in the Al-Shaab Hall in Bab Al-Muaadham in Baghdad, Iraq. Representatives of OPEC’s founder members – Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela – attended the meeting, which is widely known as the Baghdad Conference. Development (the OPEC Fund) was established by the member countries of OPEC in 1976 with a distinct mandate: to drive development, strengthen communities and empower people. The OPEC Fund works in cooperation with developing country partners and the international development community to stimulate economic growth and social progress in low- and middle-income countries around the world. A few years younger than OPEC, the OPEC Fund is approaching its 45th anniversary.
