EMERGENCY GRANTS FOR LEBANON AND SUDAN T

he OPEC Fund recently approved two emergency aid grants that will be channeled through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Lebanon and Sudan. A US$200,000 grant will help deliver

assistance to the victims of the August 4, 2020 Beirut Port explosions. It will support Lebanese Red Cross relief operations, which include supplying healthcare and medicine through primary health centers and mobile medical units, and providing emergency shelter and other essential assistance to those in need. The OPEC Fund’s grant comes in response to the IFRC’s appeal to scale up emergency medical support and economic relief for the people affected

The OPEC Fund and Lebanon have been partners in development since 1992 across all of the institution’s finance windows. The OPEC Fund has provided: public sector loans to help rehabilitate roads, boost food security and household incomes, and enhance vocational education and health systems; and private sector finance to support SMEs and trade finance operations. Additionally, OPEC Fund grants have supported education programs for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, as well as training, health and other initiatives.

TARGETING KEY SECTORS

by the Beirut Port explosions for 24 months. An emergency aid grant of US$300,000 will support relief efforts in Sudan following severe flooding. In July, heavy rains caused some of the worst flooding the country has seen in more than 70 years. Infrastructure and homes were destroyed, and thousands of people displaced. The OPEC Fund grant will ultimately support the Sudanese Red Crescent Society in providing essential supplies and assisting those who have lost livelihoods. The OPEC Fund’s partnership with IFRC dates back to 1997. Since then, the Fund has extended 84 grants totaling more than US$28 million in support of operations worldwide.

IN SUDAN The OPEC Fund and Sudan have a longstanding partnership dating back to the institution’s inception in 1976. Since then, the OPEC Fund has provided public and private sector finance in areas including agriculture, energy, industry and water and sanitation, as well as support to the country’s SMEs. Additionally, grants have helped strengthen health systems in underserved communities, provide educational and job opportunities for women, and enhance agricultural productivity.
