The city’s oldest building is St Nicholas Priory. Founded by William the Conqueror in 1087 it is now presented as a rich merchant’s town house, and holds regular special events for families. Also in the West Quarter is Tuckers Hall – a medieval guildhall still in use today.
The Exeter Guildhall on the High Street has served as the centrepiece of Exeter’s civic life for more than 800 years and is open to the public to visit.
Much of Exeter’s historic wealth was due to its prominence in the woollen cloth industry, and architectural evidence of this can be seen today on the Historic Quayside. Find out more at the Custom House Visitor Centre.
Around every corner are reminders from Exeter’s past, and many of Exeter’s historic buildings are now home to shops, pubs and restaurants, which you’ll discover as you wander around the city.
