Activities & sport
If you love the great outdoors, Exeter is the perfect destination. Its location on the River Exe, surrounded by countryside and close to the coast, lends itself perfectly to outdoor activities, such as walking, cycling and water sports.
Hire a bicycle from Exeter Quayside, and if you’re feeling adventurous, follow the Exe Estuary Trail, a 26 mile, mainly flat cycle and walkway which runs around the entire Exe Estuary linking Exmouth, Exeter and Dawlish, with fantastic views along the River Exe.
Exeter Quayside is also home to the south west’s largest indoor climbing wall, at the Quay Climbing Centre.
Exeter’s location in the heart of Devon means you’re never too far from the countryside. Follow the Green Circle
walking trail around the city, a 12-mile route that takes in valley parks with far reaching views, or the 368 square miles of wide-open space at nearby Dartmoor National Park provides the ultimate outdoor playground!
Professional sport in Exeter comes in the form of Exeter Chiefs Rugby and Exeter City FC. Exciting, competitive horse racing also takes place at Exeter Racecourse.
The biggest-ever celebration of women’s rugby comes to Exeter’s Sandy Park in 2025 as we welcome the Women’s Rugby World Cup England 2025 to our city.
