“A real gem for shoppers”
The traffic-free, cobbled Gandy Street is said to have inspired J.K Rowling’s Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter series, and there are indeed some quirky shops here. You’ll find independents selling handmade jewellery, chocolate, crystals and home furnishings.
You’ll find many of Exeter’s shops in historic buildings, particularly those in the High Street and Cathedral Quarter. Many independents are tucked away in interesting alleys and arcades, including designer and vintage fashions, chic boutiques, and jewellery, such as Polkadot Gallery on Martin’s Lane offering beautiful jewellery pieces from around the world.
Exeter’s Quayside is a real gem for shoppers, with craft and gift retailers situated in historic bonded warehouses such as Quay Presents, the perfect place to find a unique souvenir or gift. Visit the Exeter Antiques Centre to browse collectables and antiques including furniture, toys and vinyl records. You’ll be in vintage heaven!
Magdalen Road is a hub of independents, great for local food & drink and just a short walk from the city centre. Nearby Topsham also has a fantastically eclectic mix of specialist shops to explore.
Explore Exeter’s diverse range of independents on one of 5 themed shopping trails – visit
www.exetertrails.co.uk to find out more. You can even spend the city’s own currency, the Exeter Pound at many of the independents.
