A Feisty C

anadian!

A very feisty Canada goose was admit ted to Stapeley Grange with f ishing line t ight ly wrapped around its leg, to the lef t tarsometatarsus bone to be precise! Af ter carefully removing the line we then started to carefully clean up the wound.

Pain relief and ant ibiot ics were administered on day one to support the blood circulat ion. In such cases where line has severely restricted circulat ion it is essent ial that we manage pain, keep them comfortable in a quiet environment and avoid pressure necrosis ? a very common consequence of entanglement lesions. Necrosis can result in the loss of viability of the af fected area, which ult imately ef fects whether or not we are able to return an animal back to the wild.

The goose was closely monitored over the coming days to ensure there was no long last ing ef fects f rom the f ishing line and af ter two weeks the team were pleased to be able to sign the goose allowing staf f to return to the wild.

First sparrowhawk patient of 2019

This goose was extremely lucky, as sadly we see too many entangled animals that arrive present ing with severe necrot ic lesions, which we have to put to sleep. It is so f rustrat ing when we have such injuries, as they can be easily avoided if f ishing lit ter is disposed of responsibly.
