PROTECTING SHORELINE We received the following note from Mark Bisset, Executive Director of Te Couchiching Convervancy:


“Because I am so excited about this news, I thought your other readers might be as well. My associates at the Nature Conservancy of Canada are working on a project that, if successful, would permanently protect 18 kilometres of pristine shoreline in the North Chan- nel, including what looks to me like an astoundingly beautiful anchorage for small boats.


They are pulling out all the stops to meet their fundraising targets, and I wondered if SCA might be able to help get the message out through your social media posts.”


From the project sheet text: Te Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has an amazing opportunity to acquire 7,608 hectares (18,800 acres) on Manitoulin Island at Vidal Bay. When combined with nearby and adjacent conservation lands that NCC has already conserved, this will become a protected area com- plex of 250 square kilometres (24,860 hectares / 61,435 acres) - the largest of its kind south of the Canadian shield in Ontario. It will conserve an astonishing 86 kilometres of Great Lakes shoreline, more than twice what is currently pro- tected at Bruce Peninsula National Park.
