Ray is also quite an interesting writer and has documented many of his trips in our WebLetter archives.

What’s new fom Glen-L? Our newest offering is the ZipKit that is a complete CNC-cut wood parts kit for our 14-foot Zip outboard runabout. Tis kit was created and is manufactured by a local builder.

Have you noticed any trends recently in terms of types of boat designs, construction techniques, or materials? When building test models of our designs, we’ve always used Douglas-fir plywood because it was readily available and of good quality. But, quality of fir plywood has been wanting for some time, so most folks are buying marine-grade plywood. Woods such as Okoume and even Hydrotek have become more popular.

SMALL CRAFT ADVISOR We always used dark red Philippine mahogany for building

our frames, but it’s near impossible to find this anymore. Most use African-type mahoganies.

Do you anticipate amateur boatbuilding will remain popular in the coming years? I hope so! So many dads and grandpas build a boat with the younger generation, so it would seem that it will continue be- cause of that. Tere aren’t many wood-shop classes in schools anymore, so it’s up to this generation to pass that along.

Why do you think Glen-L has been successful for so long? I think our name is trusted because our designs are successful and so many have been built through the years. People seem to like us and we truly love our customers. •SCA• Visit www.GlenL.com
