estled on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains and just east of Santa Clarita, you will find Placerita Canyon Nature Center, a 350-square foot County facility with multiple hiking trails and picturesque views. Once owned by the
Walker family and sold to the state of California in the 1950’s, the Walker home is still erect and remains an araction to those who visit aer receiving a much- needed restoration.
Designated as a historical landmark by the State of California, Placerita is said to be the first place in California where gold was discovered. Records state a man by the name Francisco Lopez made California’s first gold discovery back in 1842 while gathering wild onions. As he lied the onions from the ground, gold particles appeared on the roots which predate James Marshalls gold discovery at Suer’s Mill by six years. Aside from its historical significance, Placerita Canyon Nature Center has wonderful amenities for the public to enjoy. Just outside the nature center, several bird species are displayed for visitors to view.
In the past few years, recent wildfires have limited access to the public to certain areas of the park. The great work from firefighters and community contributions have allowed for restorations and upgrades to occur. Placerita Canyon Nature Center has gone through some upgrades which include a brand-new amphitheater. Every Saturday, the amphitheater caters to upward of 100 guests as they enjoy a live animal presentation where visitors from all of Los Angeles County and beyond are welcome to partake.
Set to be completed by the end of 2019, the Canyon will feature a wheelchair accessible hiking trail that will give those with limited mobility access to nature. Along Interactive displays for visitors to explore will be available along this accessible path. These displays focus on sense of touch, sound and smell to name a few.
Literature at the displays will be offered in braille.
The public can become an environmental steward for Placerita by becoming a Placerita Canyon Nature Center Associate Volunteer (PCNCA). The park provides a Naturalist Volunteer Training Program annually. These graduate volunteers become environmental stewards in their community and become Naturalist Environmental
Stewards as educational tour guides to thousands of school children at the park.
