Four celebrate Technical Teaching Fellowships

Four further education teachers have been awarded prestigious Technical Teaching Fellowships from the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. Launched in June 2018, the fellowships are designed to celebrate,

develop and disseminate exceptional practice in technical teaching. They are awarded to outstanding practitioners who are recognised for their high-impact teaching practice and delivering effective learner outcomes. The 2020/2021 Technical Teaching Fellows are (pictured left):

Dr Lynda Broomhead (Petroc College); Chris Fairclough (Lakes College, National College for Nuclear); Shell Fearn (North Hertfordshire College); Nicholas Hart (The Sheffield College). Each Fellow is awarded between £5,000 and £15,000 to support their activities, ensuring they have remission time from their day jobs. Fellows will develop knowledge transfer activity action plans (Pathways to Impact) to maximise the benefit of their Fellowships and will attend workshops, speak at conferences and deliver a final written report. David Russell, the ETF’s chief executive, said: “Everyone at the ETF would like to congratulate the four expert teachers on being awarded their Technical Teaching Fellowships. They will be a benefit to further education by being at the forefront of improving technical education in the sector.” Nigel Williams, Secretary of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, said: “These Fellowships will help raise standards of teaching in further education and thus inspire the next generation of British innovators who will develop the emerging technologies that are transforming the world economy.”

Free training and support for digital learning

A programme of free, online training and community support has been launched on the Education and Training Foundation’s (ETF’s) Enhance Digital Teaching Platform to help teachers and trainers prepare for delivery of the new digital entitlement courses later this year. The Department for Education and Training (DfE) commissioned the

ETF to deliver a blended professional development programme to prepare teachers, trainers and leaders to deliver the new qualifications which are based on the Essential Digital Skills (EDS) Framework, launched by Government in 2018, and the associated National Standards for EDS. The core of the ETF’s programme consists of 20 short, online training modules covering the five skills areas of the new national standards, together with an online community of practice to enable peer-to-peer support. Practitioners can assess their readiness to teach the digital courses through an online self-assessment tool. The online offer is complemented by a series of face-to-face workshops and webinars. The digital entitlement means that, from September, adults aged 19

and over, with no or low digital skills, can take EDS qualifications for free, under the Adult Education Budget, in line with the existing English and maths entitlements. The new standards cover five skills areas: using devices and handling information; creating and editing; communicating; transacting and being safe and responsible online. The Enhance Digital Teaching Platform has received an EdTech 50 2020 award for its role in shaping the education and technology sector across the UK.
