Major government investment in FE teaching and leadership

By Staff Reporter The Government has announced a multi-million pound investment in the professional development of further education teachers and trainers, and the strengthening of sector leadership and governance. Education Secretary Gavin Williamson announced a £24 million boost to help FE providers recruit, retain and develop excellent teachers. It includes £11m for bursaries and grants, worth up to £26,000, to attract talented people to train to teach in FE in priority subject areas such as STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), English and SEND teaching. There is £10 million to expand the successful Taking Teaching

Further programme, delivered in partnership with the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). The scheme has already supported more than 100 technical experts into FE teaching, and the additional funding will support up to 550 more in 2020. And there is £3 million for high-quality mentor training programmes, also designed and delivered by the ETF to support FE teachers – including early- career practitioners – to develop and progress. The ETF has also been awarded a major new four-year contract by the Department for Education to deliver T Level Professional Development from April 2020. Previous Government funding

has allowed the ETF to help providers prepare for the first tranche of T Levels starting in September. The new contract will be available to providers delivering future T Level tranches, and will allow the ETF to increase the breadth and depth of its support. It will work with leading experts and sector partners to deliver the innovative contract design, including the creation of new Centres for Professional Technical Education (CPTE). These will be demand-led, based on the highest levels of industry skill shortages within a T Level subject area. Mr Williamson has also announced nearly £14 million for leadership and governance. It includes: a £9 million College Collaboration Fund to support sharing knowledge, expertise and best practice; and up to £4.5 million more for the ETF’s continuing professional development (CPD) programmes for leaders and governors.
