SHAUN CREECH TEACHES AND ASSESSES LEVEL 2 AND LEVEL 3 REFRIGERATION AND
We feature one of the coolest – literally – vocational areas in this issue, namely air-conditioning and refrigeration. Shaun Creech and Shannon Baldock both teach and assess apprentices working in the industry on opposite sides of the world. And there are some significant differences in the working patterns enjoyed by both men.
AIR-CONDITIONING AT EASTLEIGH COLLEGE. SHAUN IS A MEMBER OF SET AND HAS QTLS STATUS.
Shaun joined the Army when he left school and trained as a chef, but when he left in 1989, he moved into the refrigeration industry where
he worked for a number of years. A former lecturer of Shaun’s encouraged him to consider a move into teaching and this prompted him to apply for a job at Eastleigh, where he has been working for 10 years. Like Shannon, Shaun is a lecturer and an assessor. But Shaun’s hours vary markedly week to week – sometimes he has
as few as three hours’ teaching a week and in others, 30 or more. Shaun also assesses apprentices in the workplace and, again, this can be anywhere between one and a dozen visits per week. Shaun has a raft of professional and teaching qualifications, including a Certificate in Post Compulsory Education, Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills
(QTLS) and a certificate in adult literacy and numeracy. Needless to say he has vast industry experience and vocational qualifications. Both Shaun and Shannon belong to industry professional bodies, in Shaun’s case the Air Conditioning Refrigeration Industry Board (ACRIB), where he sits on the board’s education committee. He is also a

Fellow of the Institute of Refrigeration. As a Member of the Society for Education and Training (SET), Shaun has access to a range of professional development resources and support. He also attends training days at Eastleigh and staff can apply for additional continuing professional development (CPD). Eastleigh’s industry links keep teaching workplace-focused, and also bring donations of equipment.
SHANNON BALDOCK IS AN AIR-CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION
LECTURER WORKING FOR TAFE (TECHNICAL AND FURTHER EDUCATION) SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
Shannon was running his own business in the electrical industry when he began dipping his toe in education as a relief teacher. He came
to realise that a job in teaching would improve his work-life balance, compared to running his own business, and so he went full-time. Shannon has been
teaching at TAFE SA for four years. He has more regular teaching and assessing hours than Shaun, amounting to 24 hours per week. He spends a further 16 hours a week on preparation and admin duties. All of Shannon’s students are employed as apprentices. Like Shaun, Shannon boasts industry qualifications and brings huge experience to the role. He also has diplomas in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and
in Training Development and Design. He keeps up to date with industry through his membership of the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air conditioning and Heating (AIRAH). Shannon is encouraged by TAFE SA to attend industry events.
In terms of professional development in teaching, TAFE SA also supports professional development for its teachers, trainers and assessors, including internal e-learning and regular professional development days. Shannon’s apprentices learn in traditional ways, by observing and taking notes, but there is also an element of self-directed e-learning and virtual reality training. Shannon’s department is part of an industry reference group that meets quarterly to ensure that training stays relevant.
EASTLEIGH COLLEGE Eastleigh College is a general further education college specialising in technical and professional courses and apprenticeships. It teaches some 22,000 learners per year across eight sites.
TAFE SA TAFE SA is South Australia’s largest vocational education and training provider, and one of the largest in Australia, enrolling some 70,000 students a year and delivering training in 300 locations. It also offers some higher education courses.
