WORKING TOWARDS AN UNDERSTANDING OF TEACHERS’ WELL-BEING SO THEY CAN ENJOY A FULFILLING CAREER AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE

At the beginning of June we met with our Practitioner Advisory Group (PAG) – 40 FE practitioners who represent the breadth of further education and training, from organisations across the country, working together to share their experience and give feedback on their membership. It is a great reminder of the way the Society for Education and Training (SET) connects like-minded people. You may be the only trainer in your organisation, but with SET membership you are part of a community of thousands of FE professionals, united by a commitment to quality education, who appreciate the challenges of working in the sector. As your professional membership body it is vital that we work hard to understand these challenges, so we have been supporting the new research led by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) and the Education Support Partnership to better understand the well-being of those working in FE at different career stages. Thank you to more than 1,000 SET members who responded to the recent well-being survey, and to those who will be joining us at focus groups across the country. Your input is crucial in building an understanding of how work-related and personal factors impact on the well-being of those working in the sector. We aim to share findings from this

research at the SET Annual Conference 2019, where we will have a breakout session on mental health and well-being. This will build on the insightful panel from the Education Support Partnership at the SET Conference in 2018 that reminded us to “put your oxygen mask on first” – in other words, look after yourself first so that you can care for others. That’s also why we reward SET members with free access to Playpass, a lifestyle benefit service with savings on shopping, insurance and a range of activities. We recognise that to really impact the well-being of learners, to continue to be a creative, dynamic and enthused professional, you need to have a fulfilling life outside of work. This summer, I’ll be using my Playpass discount to stay in a log cabin in the Forest of Dean, in Whitemead Forest Park. Now the weather is getting warmer, make sure you have registered with Playpass to look for similar ways you can spend time and relax with your family and friends. If you can’t find your email invitation to join, call our Membership Enquiries team for more information. To find out more about the SET
