Eugene E. “Gene” Gilhooly died on Au- gust 17 at the age of 94. He was part owner of Schoolyard Stable and was a regular at Mary- land racetracks for many years. Gihooly was an elementary school principal for more than 30 years in Linthicum, Tyler Heights, and Da- vidsonville. Gilhooly, who regularly stopped by the Maryland T oroughbred Horsemen’s Association offi ces to chat, was remembered as a vibrant, energetic and outgoing man who frequently referred to himself as “the happiest man on Earth.”
Rosecroft and Ocean Downs caller William
J. Perkins, III, died on August 22. He was 77. Perkins was born in Tanners Falls, Pennsylva- nia, and grew up on Cold Springs Farm where he fell in love with Standardbred horses. He graduated from Honesdale High School in 1964. Dur- ing his high school summers, Perkins worked for legendary trainer Russell Dunn at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Perkins spent some time at Delhi Tech in New York be- fore leaving college for a career in the harness racing industry. He worked as second trainer
for his uncle, Don Perkins, at Vernon Downs where he started his race an- nouncing career at just 19 years old. He also called the Keystone Colt Stakes Association fair circuit before moving to New York’s Bata-
via Raceway and then landed at Ocean Downs on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Perkins was an integral part of Rosecroft Raceway as race call- er for 25 years. Perkins was a past president of the American
Harness Racing Secretaries Association and also a licensed auctioneer. He was part of the team that developed a Standardbred auction at Rosecroft. Perkins is also a member of the Wayne Area Sports Hall of Farm.
Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard,
originally from England, died on August 27 at his Hollywood, Florida, home. He was 82. Sheppard trained horses across the country including 15 Eclipse-award winners and was the leading National Steeplechase Association trainer 26 times. Sheppard, who based his op- erations out of Ash- well Stable in West Grove, Pennsylvania, offi cially retired from racing in January 2021 after

his fi nal title. His ca- reer spanned some 60 years and covered both fl at track and steeplechase horses. His accomplish-
ments are numerous, including winning the Breeders’ Cup Grand National four times, the Colonial Cup 11 times, and the New York Turf Writers Cup 12 times. Overall, he ran
