https://marylandhorse.com/book-club/Sign up. Te current book is Te Great Sweepstakes of 1877: A True Story of Southern Grit, Gilded Age Tycoons, and a Race Tat Galvanized a Nation, by Mark Shrager.
On September 6, the Maryland State Board of Public Works approved
the release of $500,000 in legislative bond money for the Waredaca Eventing Education Foundation (WEEF) footing improvement project. WEEF is a 501(c)(3) dedicated to supporting, enhancing, and expand- ing the education of horse and human athletes in the equestrian sport of eventing. Te General Assembly passed the bond initiative during the 2023 session, and the funds will go to upgrade the indoor and outdoor riding surfaces for the health and welfare of the horses used in the Pony Club program. Te footing used by the Waredaca Pony Club Riding Center was outdated and degraded and needed to be replaced in order to protect the horses’ musculoskeletal systems from the repetitive stress of impact and to minimize falls and trips.
Tanks to a 2023 grant from the Maryland Horse Industry Board,
Industry Professional member Valerie Ormond (Veteran Writing Ser- vices) distributed 24 copies of her latest novel Believing In Horses Out West to all of Maryland’s library systems this summer. Believing In Hors- es Out West tells the story of young Sadie Navarro venturing from her home in Maryland to a dude ranch in Montana to ensure a horse she rescued is safe. Te goal of the grant project was to help readers learn more about horses through this fictional story by providing them free information about horse rescue, natural horsemanship, and trail riding. Te multiple award-winning book includes information about real life Maryland horse-related organizations including Freedom Hill Horse Rescue, Maryland Terapeutic Riding, Maryland High School Rodeo Association, and more.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
Industry Professional members are the backbone of MHC. MHC is the business association that represents equine and equine-related busi- nesses in the state, and the range of equine-related businesses (accoun- tants, lawyers, landscapers, fence builders, etc.) is broad.
One example is our new IP member Courage to Flourish, founded by
Katie Roe. Roe is a licensed occupational therapist and certified health care professional who offers life coaching and consulting to help patients find their purpose and their authentic self. She is also an avid horse- woman! Learn more about Courage to Flourish at https://www.face-

CouragetoFlourish.coach.
Another example is new mem-
ber Five Star Magnawave, owned and operated by Michaline West in Lothian. West uses pulsed elec- tromagnetic field (PEMF) tech- nology to treat muscle imbalances and muscle soreness not just in horses, but also in humans, small animals, and livestock. West is an
Eventer, and she competes in recognized horses trials throughout Area II. She also competes in local Dressage shows and Hunter Paces on ei- ther her Quarter Horse, or her Connemara, or both.
Also new to MHC is Lucky Z Ranch, founded by Lucas and Zara
Switts in 2018 in Brandywine. Since then, Lucky Z has become one of the premier boarding, breeding, and training facilities in Maryland that focuses on Western riding. As the Switts say on their website, Western doesn’t have to stay in the West.” Te ranch’s breeding operation focuses on amateur and child-friendly
Western sport horses “with brains, athletics, and strong bloodlines.” Teir stallions include One Lethal Shine, a 4-year old cremello who has never thrown anything but colorful offspring; and SHR Midnight Whizard, a 7-year old golden palomino purpose-bred for Reining. Whiz, as he is known in the barn, has competed in ARHA and NRHA shows and qualified for the 2023 NRHA Futurity. Lucky Z also breeds German Shepards to keep both horses and hu- mans company.
Last but certainly not least, we welcome Kimberly Clark’s Torough- bred Placement Resources (TPR). TPR’s mission is to “improve the continued...
