Maryland Will Miss... Cathy Montgomery Sheppard, widow of


Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, was found dead on January 6 in a Dania Beach, FL, hotel room. She was living in Fort Lauderdale, FL at the time of her death. T e cause of death has not been released as of press. Sheppard was 69. She was raised on a horse farm in Delaware where her father was a trainer. Sheppard was one of the fi rst female steeplechase jockeys and rode in fl at races on and off from 1971 through 1992. T e Sheppards fi rst met in the early 1980s when she was hired to gallop the famed Storm Cat. T e couple were married in 1990. Jonathan Sheppard died in 2023. Perry Bolton of Lutherville died on Janu-


ary 28 at his home in Florida at the age of 94. Bolton co-founded Armata Stable with Ben Griswold in 1993, and together they cam- paigned Maryland Hunt Cup winners Welter Weight (1999) and Vintage Vinnie (2021 and 2022). Vintage Vinnie set a Hunt Cup record


for fastest time and widest margin. Other no- table horses that came from Armata Stables include Cornhusker, Dynaski, New Member, Toughkenamon, Orsay, Wildcatter, Coal Dust, Brother Sy, Our Friend, and Fashion Line. Bolton and Griswold were awarded the Bryce Wing Award for outstanding contributions to Maryland timber racing in 1998. Bolton also hunted with Green Spring Valley Hounds and was heavily supportive of the Maryland stee- plechase community. Outside of racing, Bolton worked for specialty printing fi rm McCorquo- dale and was Vice President of Corporate De- velopment for T e Baltimore Sun. Carroll G. Hetrick of Preston died on Janu-


ary 31 at the age of 64. Born in Salisbury, Het- rick was active in the Quarter Horse world as a trainer, competitor and well-respected judge in Maryland and Delaware. He and his wife, Sammi, owned Hetrick Ranch in Preston. Het- rick was also an auctioneer and later in life was
