and served in the Navy during World War II. When the war was over, he became a reporter for the Baltimore Sun before joining the same organization’s new TV station WMAR-TV in 1947. He then joined CBS in New York in 1950 before moving to ABC and serving as host of “Wide World of Sports,” which de- buted in 1961. His love and extensive cover- age of T oroughbred racing led to his founding Maryland Million Day in 1986, renamed the Jim McKay Maryland Million Day after his death. T e race day card featuring Maryland’s horse breeding and rac- ing industry, and was copied by many states outside of Maryland. It was the fi rst state-bred showcase in the U.S. Outside of rac-
ing, McKay also cov- ered NFL games, the Olympics, auto racing
and the FIFA World Cup, just to name a few. McKay won 13 Emmy Awards and was inducted into both the U.S. Olympics Hall of Fame and the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame.
National Steeplechase Champions
As seems to be the trend for many
years, most of the 2016 National Steeplechase Association year- end titles ended up in the hands of Maryland owners, trainers and jock- eys. T e big win- ner this year was Rawnaq,
