and served in the Navy during World War II. When the war was over, he became a reporter for the Baltimore Sun before joining the same organization’s new TV station WMAR-TV in 1947. He then joined CBS in New York in 1950 before moving to ABC and serving as host of “Wide World of Sports,” which de- buted in 1961. His love and extensive cover- age of T oroughbred racing led to his founding Maryland Million Day in 1986, renamed the Jim McKay Maryland Million Day after his death. T e race day card featuring Maryland’s horse breeding and rac- ing industry, and was copied by many states outside of Maryland. It was the fi rst state-bred showcase in the U.S. Outside of rac-

and the FIFA World Cup, just to name a few. McKay won 13 Emmy Awards and was inducted into both the U.S. Olympics Hall of Fame and the American Sportscasters Hall of Fame.
