The Equiery’s 2017 Business Sessions
1 p.m. p.m. CASH FLOW – YOUR BUSINESS DEPENDS ON IT How to get paid - and what to do when you can’t get paid. What you need to know before you accept that fi rst payment from a new client! Do clients or former clients make you crazy because they are slow pay or they always “forget?” This seminar will offer simple and “doable” tips which can reduce your receivables and your headaches and increase your cash fl ow. What if they just refuse to pay? What recourse do you have? How do “lien laws” work?
2 p.m. EMPLOYEES vs CONTRACTORS vs WORKING STUDENTS & INTERNS When and why do you need to carry worker’s comp? Barn help and high turnover: it’s just the nature of the business. Or is it? Benefi ts (health insurance, free boarding or other perks, pros and cons) When is a working student not a working student?
When a contractor is not really a contractor but an employee - what you need to know to avoid paying potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in fi nes or penalties.
3 p.m. MANAGING SOCIAL MEDIA: Your Barn, Your Employees, Your Clients, Your Reputation Love it? Hate it?
It is a great way to build and foster a sense of community among your clients. But it can also backfi re.
How to handle the following real-life situations: • young under-age farm employees, wearing farm logo wear, posting inappropriate photos (such as engaging in illegal activities) or messages on their own social media sites
• handling delicate situations, such as the illness or death of horses, and being prepared for potential social media client conversations • digital bullying…when it is no longer “just kidding” or “that’s our sense of humor” – and when does it become harassment.
As a business owner, not only do you need policies (including anti-harrassment policies) in place to ensure the reputation of your busi- ness, but in order to protect your business from lawsuits or wrongful termination accusations. Also useful for managers of social media sites for riding and horse show associations and clubs.
4 p.m. LEVERAGING SOCIAL MEDIA: Marketing & Growing Your Horse Business Everyone says social media is the way to build a business these days Yet you can’t help but ask, “is that true? And if so, how does it actually help me make more money?” You can see that Facebook can be a great way to communicate with your clients, but you are having trouble fi guring out how it can actually lead to increasing that all important bottom-line. And then there is the learning curve…do you really have time to fi gure out how to use it, when you are not even sure what it is? And then there are the pitfalls…you’ve heard the horror stories. Oh, it’s just too much…it makes you want to just go do stalls! Or maybe you are using social media…but you are not sure you are seeing the results you had expected. This seminar will provide an introduction to social media from people in the horse world who have been able to successfully leverage these marketing tools to grow their business, in a tangible way that can be documented/recorded.
5 p.m. BUSINESS WEBSITE: Where and how to start You know you need one. Every legitimate business these days has to have some sort of web presence. But where to start? And how much is it going to cost? Those of us who are small business owners, we are used to boot-strapping. We don’t have a pool of cash to invest in this. And you have heard horror stories from other business owners, in which they have invested thousands of dollars, and it still isn’t operable. Should you ask that computer-handy nephew of yours to build a website? Before you do that, you need to attend this seminar.
6 p.m. VET MEDICINE: Everything you wanted to know, but were afraid to ask! Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center will present 5 challenging and intriguing veterinary cases that will be ex- plored, to be followed by an open Question & Answer session.
