Fibre Optic Cabling Fibre Optic Cabling


Fibre optic cabling enables 10 Gigabit/sec data rates to be transmitted up to 550m on multimode fibre and several kilometres on singlemode fibre.


Singlemode or Multimode Fibre? The decision to use multimode or singlemode fibre depends on a number of factors, including the amount of data to be transmitted, the distance over which it must run and the budget available.


Singlemode fibre is relatively cheap, however the cost of the active equipment on each end is significantly more expensive than that required for multimode fibre.


Ultima offers OM3 and OM4 multimode fibre and OS2 compliant singlemode fibre. OM1 and OM2 should only be used in legacy installations.


The type of connector used, ST, SC or LC, often depends on the type of connector on the active transmission equipment but the preference should be for LC which combines performance, ease of use and a small form factor that allows up to 96 fibres to be patched in just 1U of rack space.


To minimise optical power losses throughout the cabled infrastructure we recommend the use of pigtails that are fusion spliced on to the fibre optic cable.


High Density Solution for data centres and high use environments Ultima’s MTP fibre solution provides a factory terminated, high density, easy to install cabling solution for data centres and other high use environments. Utilising the high performance MTP connector the trunk cables can be joined to breakout cables for direct connections or to a panel mounted cassette that offers a conventional patching facility. Up to three 48 fibre cassettes can be mounted in each panel, offering up to 144 fibres in 1U of rack space.
