Research suggests that bilingualism enhances cognitive abilities, such as improved problem-solving skills, heightened creativity, and greater mental fl exibility. ICS Côte d’Azur, a bilingual primary school in Sophia Antipolis, near Nice, off ers a 50:50 English and French programme for children aged three to 11, for both French and international families. What makes ICS unique compared to other bilingual programmes,

is that all subjects are taught in both languages, including mathematics, so children become familiar with diff erent methods and approaches to learning that set them up for success at secondary school and beyond. Furthermore, ICS Côte d’Azur off ers the IB
Primary Years Programme, a comprehensive and inquiry-based curriculum designed to foster critical thinking, creativity and a global mindset among young learners. This programme emphasises holistic development, encouraging students to explore, question and connect their learning to the world around them. Aſt er extensive renovations this summer,
ICS has introduced interconnecting doors linking English and French classrooms in both Early Years and Primary. With this ability to merge two classrooms when necessary, the goal is to readily incorporate combined lessons, group activities, and projects. Gina Bianchi, Head of School says: “The school’s main focus will always be on separate English and French lessons with two teachers, but current research shows that there are benefi ts to bringing students together for short periods of time at specifi c stages in their learning to expose them to both languages simultaneously.” This innovative approach not only enhances language acquisition but also fosters a strong sense of community and collaboration among students. ■
