his summer marks more than a year when we have been concerned with the global pandemic. The resulting lockdowns and health concerns have had a tremendous impact on all of us. In recognition of this, our summer edition focuses on security and the individual, including articles on personal safety and well-being, career development and how we must rise to the challenges of this ever-changing situation as we make a tentative return to normality,

Security professionals have played a critical role throughout the pandemic and are often lone workers. Therefore, maintaining personal safety is essential and we provide a range of ideas and advice, including how technology can support security officers; how mental health and well-being initiatives are important for everyone in security; and the continuing need to develop skills in empathy and communication.
Developing a career in security is top of the agenda too: both for those at the beginning of their careers and those more seasoned professionals. We provide specific advice for young security professionals and highlight a call for standardised security career pathways. We include our regular focus on a security officer and Chartered Security Professional and the annual security salary review and its implications.
Nearly 1.5 million people in England and Wales are victims of stalking every year and during last year’s lockdowns, this increased by 40%. We provide best practice advice on how to disrupt the insidious and secretive environment stalkers try to create. Our focus on personal safety also embraces latest innovation and ideas, including an analysis of the latest tools being used to reduce domestic abuse reoffending. We also bring guidance on the steps individuals can take to tackle terrorism and avoid other types of crime.
The Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) has asked us to share new guidance on our use of professional networking sites – think before you link – advising people to make a judgement call: “if it doesn’t look and feel right, it probably isn’t”, and providing a four-step approach to assessing the legitimacy of contacts.
We cover a range of updates on partnership initiatives, with a report on the AGM of our partners, the City of London Crime Prevention Association; the launch of an exciting new collaboration between security and the London Fire Brigade: Project Kestrel, and a report on the first HI! Visibility Day in the City of London.
