Cavendish has arrived

A new name with some familiar faces

Launched at the beginning of June 2021, Cavendish Search and Selection headed up by John Palmer previously of Palmer McCarthy, brings change to the way recruitment is provided within the security sector and a couple of other select markets.

John has over 20 years’ experience supplying security related staff to the service, retail and corporate sectors. He not only wants to shake things up but, also to give a bit back.

John says: “Leaving Palmer McCarthy and setting up Cavendish was not an easy decision.” But he felt things had to change and he wants to demonstrate to employers other ways of doing things and give additional options which will benefit and have a positive impact on their business.

One of John’s bugbears which he has seen over the years is employment discrimination; this takes on many guises. John feels that large corporations and many small ones are getting to grips with gender and race issues, and these have and are being addressed as they should be. However, he believes that employers are missing a trick when it comes to the over fifties.

More and more John feels over fifties are being overlooked. Systemic ageism needs to be tackled and he wants to lead this initiative by assisting talented life-rich workers find meaningful employment.

This was reflected in a recent Daily Telegraph article which suggested older workers are at risk of being left on the “scrapheap” Latest figures have shown that over fifties unemployment rose by 50% during the second lockdown.

John is setting out the business on some key principles: Firstly, to show employers that the over fifties can offer so much, Cavendish is incentivising employers with reduced fees for those who wish to employ from the over 50s or unemployed pool. This goes a little way to giving back to the industry and to the people.

Details can be found on the Cavendish website under Terms of business www.cavendishsas.co.uk

Why are over fifties so valuable to businesses?

Experience: They offer life and work experience younger applicants have not attained. They can often bring gravitas to a situation, be the lead when the proverbial hits the fan because they have seen it before.

Diversity: You need young and older colleagues sharing knowledge. Whether it is a younger member of staff passing on IT advice or a more mature member showing a youngster the ropes on how to navigate through the day. A company should reflect a diverse workforce.

Retention: We have all probably been there before, as a younger ambitious member of staff looking for promotion or a new challenge and that next opportunity. This is less likely with a mature workforce who have gained their experience and now wish to channel the skills they have acquired into one job. After all, they may be considering their retirement options which with later retirement ages still could be some time away. You may not need to worry about succession planning for a good while.

Productivity: Combining years of experience with a diverse workforce will offer a business more options, quicker solutions, stronger knowledge base and more productivity; bring stability to teams and take the pressure off management knowing there is maturity and flexibility in the crew.

Loyalty: Recent studies have found that Boomers are the most loyal and have the most job satisfaction (Source LinkedIn). Boomers and Generation X are less likely to be driven by money and promotion thus being more content within a given workplace, appreciative for their job and likely to work hard and stay longer.
