he security sector, with its strong links to law enforcement, continues to play a significant role in today’s world, supporting police in their
work to reduce and prevent terrorism and the recent spike in gun and knife crime. Our thoughts are with everyone who has lost a relative or friend in one of these dreadful incidents. Collaboration between police, business, community groups and individuals is the way forward to preventing further escalation in this area.
In our continuing efforts to support all aspects of the security sector, this edition has a focus on all things technical, including security technology and cyber security, with a particular focus on GDPR, following its launch on 25th May.
There is a growing consensus from our contributors that a gear change is needed in the security sector’s approach to technology, in light of the current threat levels, with calls for a forum to oversee technological advance and inform and stimulate debate; better structures to support public-private engagement for cybercrime and an approach that brings together people, technology and knowledge.
As the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) makes an impact, we include three articles exploring different implications for security, with discussions on: privacy by design, recommending unified security solutions with the latest privacy features implemented, such as automatic anonymisation; how physical identity and access management can reduce GDPR compliance complexity; and how the new regulations may have serious implications for those in the business of mergers and acquisitions.
In an interesting development, the City of London Police has launched Cyber Griffin, building on the success of Project Griffin and applying the same approach to tackle cybercrime. We are also glad to cover the increasing success of Project Servator and its national rollout. We are pleased to congratulate Jayne Gifford and Karen Baxter on their
promotions to the rank of Commander in the City of London Police.
Following our successful media partnership with Security & Counter Terror Expo at Olympia in March, where we had great feedback and met many of our readers on our stand, we are delighted to be appointed Gold media partners with IFSEC International & FIREX International on 19–21 June at ExCel in London – we look forward to seeing you there.
