CREWMEMBER COORDINATION

Prior to each flight it is important for the crew to meet, discuss and brief the various aspects of that particular trip. Departure and arrival briefings set the stage for effective problem-solving and crew coordination. Each crewmember is encouraged to ask questions and discuss varied courses of action in an open dialogue.

CREW BRIEFINGS

Departure Briefings The SUESDO Card has a comprehensive list of discussion topics during a Departure Briefing. Some briefings may be very detailed and others will not depending on familiarity and complexity of the mission. The Departure Briefing will be driven by the type and length of the trip and the pilots. If there is a topic that is important to you, it is imperative you bring it up during the briefing.

AWARE Acronym

The distribution of important flight information among all crewmembers is imperative for a safe flight. Crew briefings provide an opportunity for the PIC and the crew to establish a composed, positive, professional tone that will last for the duration of the flight. The AWARE Acronym was created to help remind and ensure, especially new flight attendants, that this critical safety information is shared and that all crewmembers are “on the same safety page”.

Here are the topics are often discussed: Remember A W A R E

A Aircraft status • Preflight all of the emergency and galley equipment. Check toilet operation and cleanliness. Check

status of the potable water.

If these items need to be serviced, they can be handled early, not just prior to passenger arrival; potentially delaying a flight.

Ask the PIC/SIC if the aircraft has any service/safety related MELs or if the aircraft has been worked on prior to our departure.

If there is an item that is broken but is non safety related it can interfere with your service onboard. All crewmembers should be made aware of any safety related items.

W Weather • Turbulence enroute/NOTAMS (Notice to Airmen). Departure/arrival weather. Delays expected due to

weather. Time slot issues. Deicing delays. Wind considerations like headwinds or tailwinds that could effect the trip

A Airport Information

• High performance take-off (Rapid Climb) • Unusual Terrain near departure/destination airport (water, cliff, mountains) • Time slots (Estimated time to takeoff) • Alternate airports

R Routing information • Discuss the route for the day

E Extra • Emergency signals, evacuation plan. Standard/irregular signs/signals. Special passenger profile

information. Jumpseat restrictions Crew Coordination 2 Arrival Briefings

Arrival Briefings address any issues AFTER the flight is over. These subjects, as listed on the SUESDO CARD, are varied and important.
