In response to the worrying rise in child drowning incidents, the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) has introduced a new initiative: Water Smart Schools, which aims to teach lifelong water safety skills in a classroom setting to pupils without access to poolside safety education. Recent trials of the programme, which is free for all schools, have yielded promising results, with three schools achieving the coveted Gold level of accreditation. Water Smart Schools provides schools with a framework and all necessary resources to facilitate this essential learning. Education and positive water-
related experiences can largely prevent childhood drowning. However, access to swimming instruction and water safety education varies across the UK, with a wide disparity between low-income and ethnically
diverse families. Data from the 2022 Active Lives Survey reveals that only 34.7% of children from low-affluence families can swim 25 metres unaided, compared to 76.4% of their high-income counterparts. Water Smart Schools aims
to address this disparity by providing schools with a comprehensive framework and essential resources to facilitate essential water safety learning. Andy Lane, education manager
at RLSS UK, said: ‘Once a school has successfully completed the programme, they will be awarded the prestigious Water Smart Schools accreditation at one of three levels; Bronze, Silver or Gold. We are excited to get even more schools on board and ensure more children have knowledge needed around water safety.’
