World Music Workshops
There’s nothing like music to make a classroom really come alive. World Music Workshops delivers high quality music education in primary schools, with the aim of enthralling and inspiring pupils – after all, they’re the next generation of musicians. Run by full-time music educator and professional percussionist Jim Bernardin, the workshops engage children with percussion music and rhythms from cultures all around the world. Workshops cover music from Brazil, India, Africa, China, Indonesia, North America, and Jim’s real passion, the steel pans of Trinidad and the Caribbean. He knows how to get the best out of pupils to make their music skills come alive, combining exciting instrument demonstrations with humour and inclusivity. There’s also a world music teaching resource (We
Love To Party) available, aimed at non-specialist primary music teachers, and confidence-building staff CPD sessions can also be delivered. Jim operates across the South East and options include half days, a full day of workshops, an assembly performance and optional end-of-day performances by the children in front of their parents. Clare Farrell, Primary Phase Leader, The Westgate School, Winchester says: ‘I’ve been working with Jim Bernardin for 20 years now, doing all kinds of music workshops with primary pupils – steel pans, Indian and samba and even turning a class of Year 6 pupils into an American-style marching band. Recently, Jim delivered a steel pan Caribbean workshop with 60 of our Year 6 pupils as part of our current unit of work in geography,
learning about a contrasting locality in North or South America. Jim is incredibly inclusive and quick to spot different children’s strengths and needs. It is always brilliant to start the day getting the whole school involved in a short assembly led by Jim and it’s a great opportunity for all pupils to listen to a live performance by a professional musician. I’ve heard these assemblies dozens of times but never tire of seeing the children’s reactions to Jim playing his signature tune Under The Sea. The parents’ reaction is always amazement at how much Jim can achieve in such a short space of time. He always manages to get the entire class performing to a polished standard all together.’
